RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of case-based teaching method applied to fourth year nursing students on their professional competence and clinical decision-making levels. DESIGN: A quasi-experimental design study with a sequential-exploratory mixed-method approach. SAMPLE: 64 nursing students enrolled in the Public Health Nursing course. METHODS: A case-based teaching program was applied to the students that cover the topics of the Public Health Nursing course. Quantitative phase data were collected with the Clinical Decision Making in Nursing Scale and Nursing Students' Competence Scale. For the qualitative part, focus group interviews were conducted with a Structured Interview Form. RESULTS: It was determined that the total and subscale posttest scores of the students increased significantly compared to their pretest scores (p < .001). A moderate positive correlation was found between the total scores received from the scale and a significant positive correlation was found between researching information and adopting new information impartially and all sub-dimensions except care (p < .05). Three main themes emerged from the focus group interviews conducted after the case-based teaching method experience: usefulness, limitations, and improvement. CONCLUSIONS: Case-based teaching method is effective on students' professional competence and clinical decision-making scores. Students' professional competence levels positively affect their clinical decision-making levels.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to see if there was a link between first aid self-efficacy and the frequency of occupational accidents and non-fatal agricultural injuries in greenhouse agriculture workers. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 251 people in a district center. Sociodemographic, occupational accident, and injury questionnaires prepared by the researchers and the First Aid Self-Efficacy Scale were used to collect the data. SPSS 25.0 software was used to evaluate the data and descriptive statistics; the Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis analysis of variance were applied in the analysis. RESULTS: 71.4% of the participants experienced an occupational accident by falling and slipping; 41.7% were slightly injured after the accident, and 63.2% experienced injuries in fractures, sprains, and crushes. We found that most injuries were in the lower extremities (33.2%), and 66.4% were admitted to the hospital. We ascertained that male workers' median first-aid self-efficacy scores were significantly higher than those of female workers (p < .05). We determined there was no significant difference between first-aid self-efficacy scores according to other sociodemographic variables, occupational accidents, or injury data (p > .05). CONCLUSION: Occupational accidents and non-fatal agricultural injuries are common in greenhouse agriculture, and male workers have higher first-aid self-efficacy than female workers. Since greenhouse work is a hazardous line of work, providing simple medical first-aid training would be useful for those working in this field.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between adolescents' nutritional attitudes, obesity awareness, and diet quality with their self-reported anthropometric measurements taken during the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN AND METHODS: This cross-sectional type of study was conducted in a district in the south of Turkey. The research was carried out online with 907 adolescents who agreed to participate voluntarily. RESULTS: Among the adolescents, 28.5% considered themselves overweight, and 32.1% were currently trying to lose weight. According to BMI, 16.1% were affected by overweight/obesity. Adolescents' nutritional attitudes and obesity awareness levels were moderate, while their KIDMED nutritional habits were also moderate. In this study, a negative relationship was found between the adolescents' ASHN mean scores and their body weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, neck circumference, waist/hip ratio and waist/height ratio measurements; and between their OAS mean scores and their body weight, waist circumference, waist/hip ratio and waist/height ratio measurements; and between their KIDMED index scores and their waist/height ratio measurements (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The rate of adolescents who perceive themselves as overweight is higher than the results obtained from the measurement values. BMI levels and other anthropometric measurement values of adolescents with positive nutrition attitudes and physical activity behaviours are also positively affected. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: This study may have a significant impact on the formulation and implementation of interventions to prevent obesity and increase physical activity for school health nurses. Since the pandemic is still continuing, healthcare providers must stress the risk of obesity in adolescence.

RESUMO

Digital health literacy is defined as the ability to search, find, and understand health information available on electronic resources and to use the information obtained from these resources to address a health problem. This study aimed to identify the digital health literacy levels of high school students and the factors that contribute to its development. This cross-sectional study was conducted with 1250 high school students from 10 high schools. The data were collected using the descriptive characteristics form and e-Health Literacy Scale (eHEALS) for adolescents. The mean age of the students was 15.92 ± 0.95 years and 50.8% of them were girls. The mean score on the eHEALS was 27.52 ± 6.76, which was in the high digital health literacy range (eHEALS ≥ 26). The results indicated the mean digital health literacy scores were high in students who lived in a nuclear family, who understood the importance of good health, who had easy access to the Internet and who had highly educated parents with high income levels. Encouraging the development of digital health literacy through school curricula could offer opportunities for all young people to develop digital health literacy, regardless of socio-economic status or family situation.

RESUMO

This study was conducted to adapt the COV19-QoL scale to Turkish culture and to examine its psychometric properties in individuals diagnosed with and without COVID-19. A total of 1069 people aged between 18 and 65 years participated in the study. The COV19-QoLTR scale has six items, and it was confirmed to be one-dimensional in the Turkish sample (participants diagnosed with and without COVID-19 and the general population). Participants' perceived quality of life and levels of anxiety and depression were the most affected areas and their physical and mental health levels were the least affected by the pandemic.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to determine the knowledge level of kindergarten teachers regarding skin cancer, the sun protection behaviors they exhibit for themselves/their students, and the affecting factors. This descriptive study was carried out in the Mediterranean region in a province located by the sea. The universe of the study consisted of 181 teachers working in kindergartens, and data were collected from the 81% who agreed to participate in the study. The mean Skin Cancer and Sun Knowledge Scale of the teachers was 12.50 ± 3.27 (range 0-25) and the mean Sun Protection Behavior Scale score was 24.78 ± 6.26 (range 8-40). When the Sun Protection Behavior Scale sub-dimensions were analyzed, the teachers' mean score of refraining from the sun was 13.02 ± 2.02, sunscreen use was 9.88 ± 4.46, and hat use was 5.13 ± 2.52. Significant positive correlations were found between the teachers' knowledge scores and refraining from the sun (r = 0.222; p = 0.007) and sunscreen use (r = 0.243; p = 0.003). The least used sun protection practice of the teachers regarding the students was wearing sunglasses (64.8%) and the most used practice was remaining in the shade (75.9%). The level of teachers' knowledge about skin cancer and sun protection and their behavior regarding sun protection for themselves were moderate, but the sun protection behaviors they use for their students were inadequate. Thus, educational programs about sun exposure are needed in schools and non-formal education institutions.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship of social media addiction with sleep quality and psychological problems in high school students. The study is a cross-sectional, correlational type. The study was conducted with 1,274 students receiving education in a district located in the western region of Turkey. For the collection of the data, a Descriptive Information Form, the Social Media Addiction Scale for Adolescents (SMASA), the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), the Sleep Quality Scale (SQS) and the Sleep Variables Questionnaire (SVQ) were used. Among the high school students who participated in the research, 49.3% stated that they had been using social media for 1-3 years, 53.9% reported that they spent 1-3 h per day on social media, and 42.8% stated that they placed their telephone under their pillow or beside their bed while sleeping. Students' mean scores were 16.59 ± 6.79 (range: 9-45) for the SMASA, 16.54 ± 4.27 (range: 0-40) for total difficulties, and 14.18 ± 1.56 (range: 7-21) for the SQS, while their sleep efficiency value was 97.9%. According to the research model, difficulties experienced by high school students increase their social media addiction, while they decrease prosocial behaviours. Social media addiction in high school students decreases students' sleep efficiency (p < 0.05). It is considered important to conduct further public health studies for children and adolescents related to the risks caused by the excessive use of technology, the consequences of social media addiction, measures to protect psychological health, sleep programmes and the importance of sleep quality.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In the COVID-19 pandemic process, nursing students, who are the nurses of the future, have witnessed a different professional experience. PURPOSE: This study was conducted to examine nursing students' readiness and the coping strategies they used during the COVID-19 pandemic process in Turkey. METHODS: This is a descriptive correlational study using descriptive and inferential analysis. 967 nursing students of two public universities completed the online survey. A socio-demographic form and the Coping Strategies used in Crisis Intervention Scale (CSCIS) were used to collect the data. RESULTS: The mean score for crisis coping of the students was 189.53 ± 27.33 (range 48-240). In case of a state of emergency and an acute pandemic, while 44.1% of the students considered their individual resilience sufficient, 33.6% and 34.6% of them considered their ability to solve problems that may arise and their appropriate coping skills against negative effects, respectively, sufficient. The curriculum of undergraduate nursing education was considered sufficient in terms of readiness by 29.7% of the students, crisis intervention by 25.2% of them, and knowledge/skill level by 30.1% of them. CONCLUSIONS: Nursing students can cope with the crisis during the COVID-19 process.

RESUMO

In this study, researchers aimed to assess the situation of domestic violence against women during the pandemic. 332 women participated in the study. It was found that emotional, verbal and total violence scores of the literate ones were higher. The emotional violence scores of the women who do not work and whose partners do not work due to the pandemic are higher (p < 0.05). The researchers reached the conclusion that emotional violence is higher during the pandemic process, and that failing to work in an income-generating job triggers this situation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to examine the relationship between the empathic tendencies and altruistic behaviours of adolescents. METHODS: This descriptive and correlational study was conducted with 323 high school students in the 2017-2018 academic year. Data were collected using a sociodemographic characteristics form, the altruism scale and the empathic tendency scale. Descriptive statistics were evaluated using the bivariate correlation test and the linear regression test. RESULTS: The mean age of the participants was 16.06 ± 1.19 (min = 14, max = 20), and 50.8% of them were female. The adolescents' mean scores on the empathic tendency and altruism scales were 65.71 ± 9.08 and 67.84 ± 9.25, respectively. A statistically significant moderate positive relation was found between the adolescents' empathic tendencies and their altruistic behaviours (r = 0.369, p = 0.000). CONCLUSIONS: The empathic tendency skills and altruistic behaviours of adolescents who participated in this study were at a good level. It is important to plan and apply educational programmes that develop adolescents' empathic tendencies and altruistic behaviours and to teach them positive social behaviours such as altruism.

RESUMO

AIMS: This study aims to examine the effect of the 'I am Protecting my Child from the Sun' program based on the social cognitive theory, on parental use of sun protection products and sun avoidance behaviours. DESIGN: Cluster randomized controlled trial. METHODS: The study was conducted with three groups using a pre-test, post-test, and follow-up design. The study included 185 parents, of which 63 were in the education group, 62 were in the education + SMS group, and 60 were in the control group. The parents in the intervention group were engaged in the 'I am Protecting my Child from the Sun' program for a period of 6 weeks, while the education + SMS group, in addition to the program, also received. Primary outcomes include sunscreen use and sun avoidance behaviour and secondary outcomes were self-protection and protection of their children's behaviour. A repeated-measures ANOVA and marginal homogeneity were the main statistical tests. RESULTS: The interventions made as part of the 'I am Protecting my Child from the Sun' program increased the following behavioural components of parents in the education group and the education + SMS group, compared with the control group: sun protection product use behaviours, sun avoidance behaviours, and behaviours related to protecting themselves and their children from the sun. There was an even higher increase in these behavioural components for those parents who also received short reminder text messages. CONCLUSION: The 'I am Protecting my Child from the Sun' program and the receiving of short reminder messages had positive effects on the parents' behaviours related to protecting themselves and their children from the sun. IMPACT: The 'I am Protecting my Child from the Sun' developed parents' sunscreen use self-efficacy, norms/attitudes about sunscreen use and sunscreen use expectancy behaviour, and reduced their impediments to sunscreen use behaviour. In addition, the program developed parents' sun avoidance self-efficacy, norms/attitudes about sun avoidance and sun avoidance expectancy behaviours, and reduced tanning expectancy behaviour. Receiving SMS messages following the training was effective in parental behaviours for use of sunscreen, sun avoidance, and protecting themselves and their children from the sun. Registration number: Study is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04251598.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted with the purpose of evaluating the effect of skin cancer training provided to maritime high school students on their knowledge and behaviour. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study had a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test intervention and control groups. Two maritime high schools located in the city of Antalya were included within the scope of the study between March and June 2013, covering a total of 567 students. RESULTS: While the knowledge mean scores of students regarding skin cancer and sun protection did not vary in the pre-test (6.2 ± 1.9) and post-test (6.8 ± 1.9) control group, the knowledge mean scores of students in the experimental group increased from 6.0 ± 2.3 to 10.6 ± 1.2 after the provided training. Some 25.4% of students in the experimental group had low knowledge level and 62.2% had medium knowledge level in the pre-test; whereas no students had low knowledge level and 94.3% had high knowledge level in the post-test. It was determined that tenth grade students, those who had previous knowledge on the subject, who considered themselves to be protecting from the sun better, had higher knowledge levels and their knowledge levels increased as the risk level increased. It was found that the provided training was effective and increased positively the knowledge, attitude and behaviour levels of students in the experimental group in terms of skin cancer and sun protection. CONCLUSIONS: Along with the provided training which started to form a lifestyle, appropriate attitudes and behaviours concerning skin cancer and sun protection could be brought to students who will work in outdoor spaces and are members of the maritime profession within the risk group.
